Ahead of tomorrow’s 12^th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, Rep. Salud Carbajal (CA-24) released the following statement highlighting the program’s support of Dreamers and urging Congress to pass the bipartisan American Dream and Promise Act.

"12 years ago tomorrow, the Obama-Biden administration announced the DACA program to protect young people from being deported who came to America when they were very young," said Rep. Carbajal. "Dreamers were about 7 years old when they came to the United States through no fault of their own. DACA gave them the chance to live here, go to school, and become important members of our communities who contribute to our economy. Now, DACA recipients are teachers, doctors, lawyers, first responders, business owners, and essential workers. They make our neighborhoods better and add to America’s rich diversity.

"Even though DACA has helped over 800,000 Dreamers, the extreme right is still working to dismantle the program through the courts. These attacks have caused uncertainty and stress for Dreamers and their families. Dreamers deserve a path to citizenship and the stability that comes with it, and that’s why I’ve supported and cosponsored the American Dream and Promise Act.

“As an immigrant myself, I know Congress is long overdue to take action on fixing our broken immigration system, and the American Dream and Promise Act would be a critical part of that effort, providing a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status holders (TPS), and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) recipients.”

Rep. Carbajal immigrated to the United States when he was five years old from Mexico, and since coming to Congress, he has used his perspective as an immigrant and advocate for California Dreamers to push for much-needed reforms to the U.S. immigration system.

In addition to cosponsoring the bipartisan American Dream and Promise Act, he is one of the co-leads of the bipartisan Farm Workforce Modernization Act, which would provide stability and fairness for farmworkers and address workforce shortages in the agriculture industry. Growing up in Ventura County, Rep. Carbajal worked as a farmworker with his dad picking vegetables in Oxnard, California.

As Vice Chair of the New Democrat Coalition’s Immigration and Border Security Task Force, Rep. Carbajal has been a leader in both calling for a vote on the border security package repeatedly blocked by Congressional Republicans, and crafting a framework for fixes to border, visa, and other immigration policies.

Rep. Carbajal and the Task Force rolled out their vision for bipartisan immigration and border security reform in February, and have repeatedly called on Congressional Republicans to work across the aisle to make progress on reforming U.S. immigration policy.

He is also the author of the bipartisan Protect Patriot Parents Act, which would make parents of U.S. military service members eligible to adjust for Lawful Permanent Resident status, preventing potential deportations or separations of military families.

“Mañana, serán 12 años, que la administración del Presidente Obama y Vicepresidente Biden anunció el programa DACA para proteger de la deportación a los jóvenes que llegaron a Estados Unidos cuando eran niños,” dijo el Congresista Carbajal. “Algunos de los ‘Dreamers’, tenían alrededor de 7 años cuando llegaron a los Estados Unidos por causas ajenas a su voluntad. DACA les dio la oportunidad de vivir aquí, ir a la escuela y convertirse en miembros importantes de nuestras comunidades que contribuyen a nuestra economía. El proyecto de ley del Sueño y la Promesa Americana sería una parte fundamental de ese esfuerzo – ya que proporciona una vía hacia la ciudadanía para los beneficiarios de DACA, TPS, y otros.”

El Representante Carbajal emigró a los Estados Unidos cuando tenía cinco años desde México. Él ha utilizado su perspectiva en el Congreso como inmigrante y defensor de los ‘Dreamers’ de California para impulsar las tan necesarias reformas en el sistema de inmigración de los Estados Unidos.

Además de apoyar el proyecto ley Sueño y la Promesa Americana, es uno de los colíderes del proyecto de ley bipartidista de Modernización de la Fuerza Laboral Agrícola, que proporciona estabilidad y equidad a los campesinos y ayudará con los problemas de contratación en la industria agrícola. Al crecer en el condado de Ventura, el representante Carbajal trabajó en los campos con su padre en Oxnard, California.

Como líder del Grupo de Trabajo sobre Inmigración y Seguridad Fronteriza, de la Coalición de Nuevos Demócratas en la Cámara, el congresista Carbajal ha sido una de las voces en favor de una votación sobre el paquete de seguridad fronteriza bloqueado repetidamente por los republicanos del Congreso, y también ha llamado por reformas migratorias que incluye fortalecer nuestra seguridad fronteriza, y modernizar nuestras pólizas de visas y de otro tipos de inmigración.

El congresista Carbajal y el Grupo de Trabajo dieron a conocer su visión de una reforma bipartidista de la inmigración y la seguridad fronteriza en febrero, y han pedido repetidamente a los republicanos del Congreso que trabajen en forma bipartidista para avanzar las reformas de inmigración.

También, el congresista Carbajal es el autor del proyecto de ley de Protección de los Padres Patriotas. Este proyecto de ley bipartidista evitaría posibles deportaciones o separaciones de familias militares.
