Congressman Carbajal Co-Sponsors “Statute of Liberty Values (SOLVe) Act”

Bill Reverses Executive Order Banning Immigrants and Refugees

Today, Congressman Salud Carbajal (D-CA) co-sponsored the “Statute of Liberty Values Act” (SOLVe) introduced by Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren (D-CA).

The SOLVe Act nullifies and blocks the use of any federal funds to implement or enforce President Trump’s Executive Order to ban immigration from seven predominantly Muslim nations and to halt the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP).

“Our country’s safety and national security is paramount, and that is why I am co-sponsoring the SOLVe ACT to void and defund the President’s reckless immigration ban,” said Rep. Carbajal. “President Trump’s overly broad Executive Order only serves to fuel anti-American sentiment and propaganda, putting our national security at risk.

“An indiscriminate ban targeting immigrants based on religion or country of origin is a direct affront to American values. Reports that this Executive Order was hastily developed without the serious input from national security experts or from agencies responsible for carrying out the order, demonstrates dangerous and irresponsible leadership. We currently have one of the most stringent immigration systems in the world and I believe that we can ensure proper vetting of immigrants without violating our core American principles.”

Background: On Friday, Donald Trump signed an executive order restricting immigration into the United States from seven Muslim-majority countries for the next 90 days including Iraq, Syria, Libya, Iran, Somalia, Yemen, and Sudan. In addition, the order suspends the US Refugee Admissions Program for 120 days and reduces the number of refugees admitted into the country by more than half.
