Today, U.S. Representative Salud Carbajal (D-CA-24) issued the statement below following House-passage of the Republican-led funding bill.

“Today, I voted against the partisan Republican funding bill that does nothing to bring down the cost of health insurance for millions of Americans," said Rep. Carbajal. “Families across the Central Coast and beyond are already seeing that their health insurance costs could more than double next year if Congress fails to act. By refusing to extend the critical Affordable Care Act premium tax credits, Congressional Republicans are forcing Americans to choose between higher costs or no coverage at all. I won’t stand for that. I am a cosponsor of a bipartisan bill to extend these tax credits, and I call on Speaker Johnson to bring that bill to the House floor for a vote.”

Last month, Carbajal co-sponsored the Bipartisan Premium Tax Credit Extension Act, a bill to protect families, seniors, and small business owners from massive health care premium increases.

Throughout the shutdown, Democrats have argued that any stopgap funding bill needs to protect the expanded tax credit subsidies for health insurance purchased through Affordable Care Act (ACA) exchanges. Those tax credits and the eligibility for them were expanded by Democrats in 2021 under then-President Biden and are scheduled to expire at the end of December. If the tax credits are not protected, millions of Americans could lose their health insurance. In the coming weeks, Democrats will use every tool at their disposal to save these critical health care tax credits.
