Carbajal Statement on Republican-led Government Shutdown

Today, U.S. Representative Salud Carbajal (D-CA-24) issued the statement below on the Republican-led government shutdown.

“As of today, the federal government is shut down because Donald Trump and Republicans chose chaos over governing. Democrats came ready to negotiate a bipartisan deal to keep the government open and lower health care costs, but Trump and Republicans refused,” said Rep. Carbajal. “Now, service members are working without pay, civil servants face uncertainty, and families across the Central Coast are left wondering how this dysfunction will impact their lives. Republicans control the House, Senate, and White House — this shutdown is their mess. I will keep fighting for the bipartisan funding solution our country deserves.”

Democrats in both the House and Senate have argued that any stopgap funding bill needs to protect the expanded tax credit subsidies for health insurance purchased through Affordable Care Act (ACA) exchanges. Those tax credits and the eligibility for them were expanded by Democrats in 2021 under then-President Biden and are scheduled to expire at the end of December. If the tax credits are not protected in a stopgap bill, millions of Americans could lose their health insurance.
