Congressman Salud Carbajal (CA-24) announced today that affordable housing programs he has supported in Congress are awarding $3,546,190 in federal funds to construct nearly fifty new affordable housing units outside of Ojai. The funding is supporting the Camino De Salud project located at 11432 North Ventura Avenue in the Mira Monte area of unincorporated Ventura County. Once completed, Camino De Salud will feature 48 units of new affordable housing, in particular for residents who are experiencing homelessness and low-income Ventura County residents. “As housing challenges have gotten harder on the Central Coast, I’ve worked to boost the federal support our region is getting to lower housing costs and ensure every resident of Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo counties can afford to put a roof over their head,” said Rep. Carbajal. “Projects like this one are a no-brainer – helping those at risk of homelessness or those already without a home with not just new and safe shelter, but also supportive services that can help them and their families prosper and thrive.” The proposed construction will include amenities like a community garden, charging station, laundry facility, on-site management and maintenance, and common area Wi-Fi. Supportive services, including educational services and case management, will also be provided to residents through local partners. More information on the project can be found here. “Ventura County is desperately in need of more affordable housing options for its residents,” said Ventura County Supervisor Matt LaVere. “Congressman Carbajal’s leadership in securing this federal funding is greatly appreciated and will provide critically needed housing options for over 40 local residents.” The National Housing Trust Fund, funded through the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), allocated $62 million to California in Fiscal Year 2023 for construction and maintenance of affordable housing. Last Fiscal Year, Rep. Carbajal helped approve a 15% increase to HUD funding to support these and other federal housing programs. Additional Background: Congressman Carbajal is a member of the Congressional Renters Caucus, and is committed to ensuring every Central Coast family has access to affordable quality housing. Recently, Rep. Carbajal announced $260,000 in federal grants to support housing and homelessness assistance programs on the Central Coast and $550,000 in grants from the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco to help first-time home buyers on the Central Coast. He also in November introduced bipartisan legislation aimed at improving housing access and affordability for Central Coast veterans, the Home for the Brave Act. Last fall, construction on a new affordable housing community in Guadalupe began thanks in part to funding Rep. Carbajal directly secured in the 2022 federal budget. Rep. Carbajal’s work in Congress has also delivered $4 million to support the operation of the Anderson Hotel in San Luis Obispo, which provides housing options to low income individuals in the region. Rep. Carbajal is one of the co-authors of the Housing for All Act, a landmark bill co-authored with California Senator Alex Padilla and Representative Ted Lieu that would provide ten years of new and increased funding for construction of new housing units, rental assistance, hotel and motel conversions, and more. Carbajal is also a co-lead of the Decent, Affordable, Safe Housing for All (DASH) Act, which would help the lack of affordable quality housing through policies like creating a new down payment tax credit for first-time homebuyers, expanding and improving housing tax credits, incentivizing the construction of more affordable housing, and supporting families with children who are at risk of becoming homeless by improving services and access to housing vouchers. |
