Today, Congressman Salud Carbajal, a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus, responded to multiple reports that the U.S. Supreme Court is poised to strike down nearly 50 years of legal precedent on Constitutional reproductive rights by overturning Roe v Wade: “If these reports are true, which I wholeheartedly hope they are not, this is a devastating day for America’s rule of law. “A decision that overturns a half century of legal precedent will be a betrayal of our Constitution and a betrayal of millions of women who count on its protections to retain control of their own bodies and choices. “A majority of Americans over multiple generations have supported a woman’s right to choose. Five justices cannot change that. This is a call to action for all who believe in women’s reproductive rights. “I have backed legislation that has passed the House to prevent such a decision from erasing women’s rights by codifying the Constitutional right to an abortion into law. This pending decision makes its failure to pass in the Senate inexcusable.” In September, the U.S. House passed legislation co-sponsored by Rep. Carbajal, the Women’s Health Protection Act, to codify a woman’s right to an abortion into law. |
