Congressman Salud Carbajal proudly represents the 24th Congressional District of California, which includes the entirety of Santa Barbara County and portions of San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties.
First elected to Congress in 2016, Congressman Carbajal’s life experiences have helped him advocate for the needs of his constituents by fighting for economic opportunities for working families, environmental protections and investments in renewable energy, improvements to our immigration system, upgrades for our infrastructure and public safety, and commonsense fixes to lower costs of living like child care, health care, and housing.
Congressman Carbajal sits on the House Committee on Armed Services and the House Committee on Agriculture. He is also a senior member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, serving as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation. From this role, in 2021 he helped write and pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law – which has since delivered more than $1 billion for projects up and down the Central Coast and supporting more than 13,000 jobs.
Over his career in Congress, Congressman Carbajal has seen multiple of his bills signed into law, including bills to respond to the 2019 Conception boat fire of the Central Coast and a gun safety measure promoting the implementation of ‘red flag’ laws inspired by the 2016 mass shooting in Isla Vista. He was also a key supporter of the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary, designated in 2024, which now protecting more than 100 miles of California coastline and ecosystems as the third largest marine sanctuary in U.S. history.
His advocacy in Congress has also delivered more than $50 million in federal funding for a wide range of Central Coast projects, from upgrades for local health clinics and food banks to support for first responders and municipal police departments.
Congressman Salud Carbajal rose from humble beginnings. After emigrating from Mexico to the United States at age 5, Salud applied himself in school – working summers as a farmworker with his father – to become the first in his family to graduate from a university, earning a bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB). Later, he earned a Master’s degree in Organizational Management from the Fielding University.
Prior to his election to Congress, he served on the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors for 12 years, where he worked on initiatives to protect California’s environment, promote clean energy and sustainability, strengthen schools, and improve public health and safety.
He also served eight years in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, including being mobilized to active duty service during the 1992 Gulf War. As a veteran, Carbajal has worked to ensure the needs of our nations veterans are met.
Carbajal is married to Gina and they are proud parents of Natasha and Michael.
