WATCH: “The Majority Has Gone Home for the Night…We Are Here” – New Dem Vice Chair Carbajal Pushes Congress to Act on Bills to Protect Data Privacy, Funding for Critical Programs, and Lower the Cost of Living on the Central Coast

  • New Dem Speech 2.5.25

Congressman Salud Carbajal (CA-24), a Vice Chair of the New Democrat Coalition, joined his New Dem colleagues on the House Floor this week, highlighting inaction as Congress prepares to adjourn for the week without passing legislation to protect data privacy, lower costs of living, or reaffirm Congress’ power of the purse by negating the President’s ongoing seizure and freeze of critical federal funding.

“I want the American people to see this: the Majority has gone home for the night,” said Rep. Carbajal. “This is a co-equal branch of government, but my colleagues seem content to give up our Congressional power of the purse.

“We are here, even as they get ready to turn the lights off, working to craft legislation that will block right-wing activists and use our power in this chamber to halt all efforts to deny the law and promote chaos over order.”

The Congressman’s full remarks can be found here.

Earlier, Congressman Carbajal updated his constituents who subscribe to his newsletter on the work he is doing this week to respond to the Trump Administration and protect Central Coast funding and data.

That update can be found here.

The New Democrat Coalition is comprised of 110 center-left House Democrats committed to breaking through gridlock to deliver results for Americans.

The Congressman’s full remarks as prepared for delivery can be found below:

“I am proud to stand here, as a Vice Chair of the New Democrat Coalition, to make it clear that we are here, five weeks into this new Congress, fighting to end the chaos of this new Administration and get us back to what the American people elected us to do: lowering costs, promoting safer communities, and actually govern.

“The American people elected us to tackle the cost of living, not cut public education funding.

“The American people elected us to lower the price of groceries, not declare trade wars with allies that will raise those prices for Americans even farther.

“The American people elected us to ensure their communities are protected, not give billionaires back doors into their personal data.

“I want the American people to see this: the Majority has gone home for the night.

“We have not even tackled one bill this whole week to deal with high costs.

“This is a co-equal branch of government, but my colleagues seem content to give up our Congressional power of the purse.

“Where is the so-called party of law and order?

“That party is willing to look the other way on enforcing the law, like the laws that protect funding approved by congress.

“The self-proclaimed party of law and order is willing to let chaos rein and thousands of Americans see the funding they rely on get frozen, their benefits put on the chopping block, and even their jobs eliminated by an unelected billionaire.

“My constituents are crying out for us to do something, and I want to assure them: we are doing something.

“We are here, even as they get ready to turn the lights off, working to craft legislation that will block right-wing activists and use our power in this chamber to halt all efforts to deny the law and promote chaos over order.

“New Dems are the tip of that spear. We will fight ill-conceived tariffs, plots to raise your taxes to pay for tax cuts for the rich, fight invasions of your privacy, and of course, we will fight to deliver what we hear every single day: lower our costs of living, make our safer communities, and stop the chaos and gridlock.”
