Today, Congressman Salud Carbajal is highlighting that the bipartisan federal funding deal he helped send to President Joe Biden’s desk for approval last week included a provision to fully fund a key nutrition program that was nearing a devastating benefits cliff: the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, otherwise known as WIC. Starting last fall, nutrition experts began warning that, without Congressional action, WIC funding levels would fall low enough to cause eligible children and adults to be turned away from the program. The funding deal, which was signed by President Biden on Friday, provided $7.03 billion for the program, a $1.03 billion increase over last year’s federal budget. This funding will ensure that all eligible participants can continue to receive essential nutrition assistance and support provided by WIC. “As a member of the House Agriculture Committee and someone who has seen firsthand the difference federal nutrition programs make on the Central Coast, I’m proud to have been part of the bipartisan agreement to fully fund WIC,” said Rep. Carbajal. “More than one million California children and mothers will continue to have access to the food they need to grow and thrive thanks to this deal, and I’m proud to have had a role in advocating for it and sending it to President Biden’s desk.” In January, Rep. Carbajal and his colleagues wrote to congressional leaders seeking full funding for the program that helps 1 million California families every year. “We are extremely excited about the passed bill for the increased WIC funding,” said Dr. Mouhanad Hammami, Santa Barbara County Public Health Director. “This increase will allow WIC to keep the fruit and vegetable benefits at the higher rate that was established during COVID. These funds will help increase and improve our services to the families we serve, and we hope that it allow for healthier options of foods. We are looking forward to find out how funds will be split between Food that our WIC participants receive and administering the program. We are extremely grateful to all those who worked hard to make this happen.” USDA research back in 1988 found WIC participation improved the chance of women receiving prenatal care, and reduced premature births, low birth weights, infant mortality, and even health care costs. Recent studies have shown that $1 invested in WIC saves about $2.48 in medical, educational, and productivity costs.
