Today, Congressman Salud Carbajal (CA-24) announced that he will continue to serve on three House committees in his new term: Agriculture; Armed Services; and Transportation and Infrastructure. Carbajal will continue as the top-ranking Democrat on the Transportation and Infrastructure’s Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation, and will serve as that Subcommittee’s Ranking Member in the 118th Congress. As Chairman of the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee in his previous term, Carbajal championed new laws to update maritime liability laws and improve protections against sexual assault and harassment in the maritime industry. He also held hearings on improving safety requirements for small passenger vessels after the 2019 Conception boat fire, something he championed in his Small Passenger Vessel Safety Act–which became law in 2020. “I’m humbled to rejoin the three committees in Congress that I served on in previous years and to continue using these panels to advocate for the priorities and values of the Central Coast,” said Congressman Carbajal. “While every committee in Congress finds its places to debate and disagree, I’m particularly proud to be serving on three committees that have been steadfastly committed to doing the hard work of policymaking in these increasingly partisan times. This term will be no exception. Before these three committees we have important tasks of crafting bills that will govern our agricultural industries, our national defense, the safety of our skies and our waterways, the prosperity of our servicemembers, Coasties, and military families, and much more.” As a member of the House Agriculture Committee, Carbajal will be one of the members writing the 2023 Farm Bill – the five-year bill overseeing farm and nutrition policies for the entire United States. As a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, Carbajal–a Marine Corps veteran–will continue to advocate for Central Coast servicemembers and military families and craft policies that support Vandenberg Space Force Base through the annual defense policy bill, the National Defense Authorization Act. The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has on its agenda this Congress three key federal policy reauthorizations: a bill overseeing the policies of the Federal Aviation Administration as well as the safety and ease of air travel; legislation to reauthorize and improve Coast Guard operations; and the policies governing America’s waterways and water projects, the Water Resources Development Act. |
