Today, Congressman Salud Carbajal (CA-24), member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement on the Republican plan to repeal health care for the American people. Per reconciliation procedures, if Republicans pass the bills out of the Energy & Commerce and Ways & Means committees, the bills would return to the Budget committee to be combined. “The House Republican leadership unveiled a healthcare repeal plan this week that will undoubtedly increase costs and limit health insurance coverage for millions of Americans. This bill’s focus is not on expanding access affordable healthcare. Rather, it prioritizes rolling back tax credits for middle class Americans and hands them to the wealthy in the form of tax breaks. “The Majority’s proposal to repeal the Affordable Care Act allows for insurance companies to charge our seniors up to five times more for coverage, endangers Medicaid programs nationwide, and does not ensure access to healthcare for those with preexisting conditions. This bill is a direct attack on women’s access to healthcare, freezing all Medicaid funding for family planning clinics, including Planned Parenthood. “Perhaps the most disturbing part of this healthcare repeal, is the Republican’s attempt to rush a vote in Committee without input or analysis from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office. Essentially forcing Congress to vote on this repeal without understanding its full economic impact on hardworking Americans or how many Americans will lose insurance under this proposed legislation. “Not allowing for open debate in Congress or for thorough analysis of the potential far-reaching impact of this legislation is irresponsible. Central Coast families deserve to know the full impact of this repeal – their health and the health of their families is on the line.” Background: The Energy and Commerce Committee studied the impacts of the Affordable Care Act in Each Congressional District since its implementation, view their full report for California’s 24th District here:
