Local politicians react to Congressional health care vote

KEYT

All of the representatives for local residents in Congress are members of the Democratic party.  All have vowed to resist the GOP effort to repeal and replace Obamacare.

Their reactions:

Rep. Salud Carbajal (D):

“In order to get their harmful legislation passed, the House Majority took a bill that leaves 24 million Americans without health insurance – and made it even worse. The AHCA leaves Central Coast families with fewer protections, allowing insurers to make coverage prohibitively expensive for people with pre-existing conditions. Millions more will see their premiums and out-of-pocket costs increase 25% on average, with an added ‘Age Tax’ imposed on Americans over fifty.

“It is unacceptable for the House Majority to have forced a vote on legislation that will impact millions of lives without knowing its full cost or its harmful effects. I hope that my colleagues in the Senate will put the health of the American people over politics, and reject this misguided legislation.”

Sen. Kamala Harris (D):

“The Republican health care bill is a statement that they believe health care is a privilege for the few, not a right for all. This bill raises costs and threatens access to care for millions of Americans. This bill jeopardizes protections for those with health insurance through their job, putting nearly half of the country back at risk of going bankrupt if they get a serious illness or injury. It guts Medicaid, and threatens services for children with disabilities. It allows seniors to be charged more, making it harder to retire with dignity. It discriminates against survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. It limits access to tax credits for Californians to make health care more affordable. And Republicans passed this bill even while admitting they do not know how much it will cost, or how many tens of millions of Americans will lose coverage.

“This bill is not just about medicine or math— this is about morals. Americans are counting on us to make their health care more affordable and accessible. I will join millions of Americans in opposition to this bill and do everything in my power to fight it.”

Rep. Julia Brownley (D):

Republicans, in their obsession to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), have forgotten that their job is to make healthcare better for people, not worse.

The bill put forth today would gut patient protections, allow insurance companies to discriminate against those with pre-existing conditions, inflict a crushing age tax on seniors, and undermine coverage for women, veterans, and families, all while providing a massive tax cut to the wealthy. With less than one day’s notice, this bill was rushed to the floor without a Congressional Budget Office score or analysis of how it will impact the American people.

Despite pleas from millions across our nation, the Republicans have chosen to turn their backs on children, middle-class families, and seniors. The American people will remember who stood on their side and who didn’t. I urge them to hold their representatives accountable.
