May 6, 2019
Today, Congressman Salud Carbajal (CA-24) announced that Olivia Dong from San Luis Obispo High School was awarded first place in the 2019 Congressional Art Competition. Olivia’s winning piece, titled “A Portrait of Youth,” will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for the next year. Additionally, Carbajal announced that Dos Pueblos High School’s Jasmine Wada’s painting, “Untitled” and Righetti High School student Saige Glenn’s piece, “Underneath We Are All The Same” won second and third place, respectively. Fourth place was awarded to Philippe Ricard from Righetti High School for his piece, “Self-Made Man.” The People’s Choice award, voted on by Central Coast residents, was awarded to Earnest Righetti High School’s Grace Schlereth for her work “Growing Community on the Central Coast.” “I’d like to congratulate Olivia and all of our creative high school artists who submitted their work for this year’s competition,” said Carbajal. “Putting yourself and your art out in public view isn’t easy, so I thank each of them for bravely sharing their talents with us. I look forward to constantly being inspired by these works of art in each of my offices and every time I walk through the tunnel to the U.S. Capitol to vote!” Students from across California’s 24th Congressional District were encouraged to participate in the annual competition. A total of 123 entries were submitted from local Central Coast high schools. The winning artwork was hand-selected by an independent panel of distinguished local artists this weekend in Santa Maria. The “People’s Choice” winner was based on Facebook photo likes.
Olivia Dong will be invited to Washington D.C. in June to view her artwork on display in the U.S. Capitol and attend a ceremony for Congressional Art Competition winners across the country. The second, third, fourth, and People’s Choice pieces will be displayed throughout Rep. Carbajal’s Washington D.C., Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Maria offices. The Congressional Art Competition was established in 1982 as a way to encourage the creative talents of high school students throughout the nation. Since the beginning of the competition, over 650,000 students have participated. Rep. Carbajal is a proud supporter of a well-rounded curriculum, and he strongly encourages young artists to pursue their artistic passions and abilities. Honorable Mentions:
