MEDIA ADVISORY: Carbajal to provide legislative update to Diablo Canyon Decommissioning Engagement Panel Washington, DC – This Saturday, February 23rd, Rep. Salud Carbajal (CA-24) will attend the Diablo Canyon Decommissioning Engagement Panel’s public workshop to provide a legislative update and receive public input on strategies to store spent fuel from the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. As Diablo Canyon prepares to close, PG&E is accepting proposals from dry cask storage vendors to store and transport spent fuel. This public forum is an opportunity for industry professionals to engage with the general public on this significant issue. Carbajal will also provide an update on his work to keep the Department of Energy accountable regarding its responsibilities surrounding spent fuel storage and transportation, as well as his recent letter to the Nuclear Regulatory Committee requesting a public meeting in San Luis Obispo.
Background: In the 115th Congress, Carbajal voted to help pass H.R. 3053, the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments Act of 2017, which ensures the Department of Energy upholds its responsibility to take ownership of spent fuel and transport it to a permanent repository. This legislation passed the House but failed to move in the Senate. Congressman Carbajal has also cosponsored H.R. 474, the Interim Consolidated Storage Act, to move forward with transporting spent fuel from Diablo Canyon once the decommissioning process commences and while we work to find a permanent repository. |
