Reps. Carbajal and Bacon to Discuss Future of Education, Cybersecurity, and Extreme Weather Events in Bipartisan Congressional Exchange Program

Santa Barbara
– Next Wednesday and Thursday, August 30th and 31st, Congressmen Salud Carbajal (CA-24) and Don Bacon (NE-02), both first-term Representatives serving on the House Armed Services Committee (HASC), will participate in a bipartisan congressional exchange program to share unique perspectives and challenges of residents in their respective districts.

The Members will tour Cal Poly University’s California Cybersecurity Institute (CCI) to discuss the progress of the program as well as share language signed into law this month in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). They will then visit Vandenberg Air Force Base and receive a briefing on their operations.

On Thursday, the Members will tour UC Santa Barbara’s California Nanosystems Institute and the Institute for Collaborative Technology, which is funded through the U.S. Army. The they will then travel to Montecito for a brief tour and site visit to areas impacted most by the 1/9 Debris Flow, to meet with first responders and coordinators and view the recovery efforts from the Thomas Fire and Debris Flow.

“During our first term serving in Congress together, Mr. Bacon and I have not only worked across the aisle on legislative issues related to healthcare and immigration, but we have also developed a great bipartisan friendship,” said Carbajal. “Civility and bipartisanship remain guiding principles of my service to the Central Coast, in order to find common ground and improve the lives of families in the 24th District. I thank Congressman Bacon for making the time to visit California to exchange ideas related to education, cybersecurity and extreme weather events in our region.”

“Being able to work with others regardless of political differences is integral to getting things done, and Mr. Carbajal and I have developed a close friendship because of our work on military, healthcare and immigration issues,” said Rep. Bacon. “He came to visit the Second Congressional District of Nebraska last May and I am looking forward to visiting his district to share ideas.”

In May, Carbajal visited various locations throughout the Second Congressional District of Nebraska, engaging in discussions on transportation, agriculture, and national defense. The Congressmen visited Union Pacific to learn about transportation issues, Whispering Roots for urban agriculture, Offutt Airforce Base and the 55th Wing for defense and the University of Nebraska at Omaha for discussions on public finance of national defense and infrastructure.

These bipartisan exchange visits reflect the Members’ commitment to civility in Congress when working together on areas of common interest.
