Congressman Salud Carbajal visits border detention facility SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, Calif. - Local congressman Salud Carbajal traveled to the US-Mexico border to see first-hand what is happening there. Carbajal walked across the bridge dividing El Paso, Texas from Ciudad Juarez in Mexico to the Tornillo detention facility. The congressman also toured a so-called "tent city" where hundreds of people who crossed the border are being detained while they ask for asylum. He spoke with children being housed there. Salud said, “Three things children told me were that they were woken up at 5 a.m. in a regimented fashion. And due to the high heat, they are only given 10 to 15 minutes of recreation at a time. And lastly, they are being given no more than 5-minute showers. So this is clearly a regimented system and framework for how we are caring for these children.” The congressman says conditions are far from adequate with children being kept in the middle of the desert. He called this a self-imposed crisis by the Trump Administration. Carbajal supports legislation that would ban the separation of children from their families when crossing the border. |
