Rep. Carbajal Statement on Donald Trump’s Illegal Theft from Central Coast Taxpayers
Santa Barbara,
January 28, 2025
In the wake of President Donald Trump’s freeze of Congressionally-approved funding across a wide range of federal programs, Congressman Salud Carbajal issued the following statement: "The Central Coast received more than $1.4 billion in grants and other federal aid last year alone. Halting federal assistance – even temporarily – has the potential to harm every single Central Coast community. “This action is not only cruel, it is also illegal. Congress, on a bipartisan basis, approves these funds to help raise the quality of life and keep our communities safe. The President does not have the authority in law or the Constitution to unilaterally halt these federal assistance programs. I will fight with everything I have to ensure this illegal theft of taxpayer dollars is overturned." According to USASpending.gov, more than $1.4 billion in federal grants and assistance was awarded to Central Coast communities in 2024. Federal assistance helping the Central Coast includes funding for Head Start and other education programs, grants for first responders and local law enforcement, support that underwrites local health clinics, investments in our infrastructure, housing assistance for veterans, Medicaid, and more. As more details become available on the individual programs affected, Congressman Carbajal’s office will coordinate with Central Coast entities impacted by the halt in federal funding.
