Santa Barbara, CA – Today, Congressman Salud Carbajal (CA-24) announced that Madison Ly from Earnest Righetti High School is the winner of the 2018 Congressional Art Competition. Madison’s winning piece, entitled “The American Dream,” will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for the next year. Additionally, Carbajal announced that Paso Robles High School’s Sarai Del Valle’s painting “Soldier” and Dos Pueblos High School student Alexia Li’s piece “Constantly Risking Absurdity” won second and third place, respectively. The “People’s Choice” award, voted on by Central Coast residents was awarded to Earnest Righetti High School’s Kaitlyn Corbo for her work “Sweet Creature” and an honorable mention was given to Emma Robertson from San Marcos High School for her piece, “What the Mind Creates.” The second, third, “People’s Choice” and honorable mention pieces will be displayed throughout Rep. Carbajal’s Washington D.C., Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Maria offices. “I’d like to congratulate Madison as well as all of the talented high school artists from across the Central Coast who submitted their work,” said Carbajal. “I look forward to viewing these creative artworks in my offices and each time I walk to the Capitol to vote!” Students from across California’s 24th Congressional District were encouraged to participate in the annual competition. A total of 65 entries were submitted from several Central Coast high schools. The winning artwork was hand-selected by an independent panel of distinguished local artists last week at the 1st Thursday evening events in Santa Barbara and Art After Dark exhibit in San Luis Obispo. The “People’s Choice” winner was based on Facebook likes. The Congressional Art Competition was established in 1982 as a way to encourage the creative talents of high school students throughout the nation. Since the beginning of the competition, over 650,000 students have participated. Rep. Carbajal is a proud supporter of a well-rounded curriculum, and he strongly encourages young artists to pursue their artistic passions and abilities. Madison Ly will be invited to Washington D.C. in June to view her artwork on display in the U.S. Capitol and attend a ceremony for Congressional Art Competition winners across the country.
