Today, Congressman Salud Carbajal (CA-24) voted to extend government funding and services, provide additional disaster assistance to communities impacted by natural disasters, and avert a government shutdown at midnight tonight. As the U.S. Senate takes up the measure approved by Carbajal and an overwhelming bipartisan majority in the U.S. House earlier today, Rep. Carbajal shared the following statement: “Extremism lost today, and the voice of commonsense governing won. "For weeks, House Democrats and I called for the far-right’s demands for extreme cuts to be dropped, and for Congress to do its most basic job: prevent a government shutdown. "Today, we averted the catastrophe that MAGA extremists wanted, with none of their cuts to programs Americans rely on. "The bill we passed will keep essential services running still did not have everything we needed – including support for student loan repayment and security aid for Ukraine – but the alternative today was not an option. "I remain deeply concerned about how close the far-right took us to the brink – and urge Republican leaders to use the chaos of the past month as a reminder of what happens when you let the extremists call the shots. "Over the next 45 days, I hope House Republicans can heed the Senate’s example of writing and advancing all of their funding bills with bipartisan majorities as we continue to navigate the inherent challenges of divided government.” |
