Congressman Salud Carbajal proudly represents the 24th Congressional District of California. The District includes the entirety of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties, and a portion of Ventura County.
Carbajal graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) with a degree in Iberian Studies. He holds a Master's Degree in Organizational Management from the Fielding University. Salud served eight years in the United States Marine Corps Reserve, including active duty service during the 1991 Gulf War.
Carbajal is married to Gina and they are proud parents of Natasha and Michael.
Carbajal formerly worked as Program Director in the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department, Assistant Executive Director of Zona Seca, Parent Involvement Coordinator for the Head Start Program, and Program Director for the City of Santa Barbara Lower Westside Recreation Program. Prior to representing the Central Coast in Congress, Salud served as Santa Barbara County’s First District Supervisor for twelve years.
As County Supervisor, Salud championed the development of a comprehensive customer service program in county government to ensure responsive, effective, and accountable government for all residents and initiated the effort to create the Blue Ribbon Budget Task Force to examine our county operations and budget process. He has also advocated for health and social service safety net programs for our most vulnerable residents – children, frail and elderly, poor and the homeless that includes co-sponsoring an initiative to provide health insurance for all the County's children and spearheading the creation of a job skills and mentorship program for at-risk youth throughout the County.
Salud has promoted environmental stewardship and sustainability through projects such as working to establish a conversion technology waste to energy facility, reducing the County's use of pesticides through its Integrated Pest Management Program, establishing an energy efficiency financing district, and serving on the National Association of Counties (NACo) Energy, Environment and Land Use Committee (EELU) where he co-authored a Resolution to Reduce Emissions from Marine Vessels - that was adopted by NACo in 2009.
Over the years, Salud's public service has demonstrated a strong commitment to protecting our natural environment and resources, enhancing public safety, and working regionally to address our transportation, housing, and workforce challenges.
In Congress, Salud is focused on creating economic opportunity both for the Central Coast and throughout the country.
